117 Oakview Avenue
Dear Future Homeowner,
Welcome to 117 Oakview Avenue where classic Maplewood charm meets incredible convenience! We have loved so many things about our wonderful home and are excited for you to embark on its next chapter.
When we first moved in, our daughter was in elementary school (Tuscan-but equidistant to Clinton and Seth Boyden too) and it was a short walk down the hill to the Maplewood Children’s Library and softball games in Maplecrest Park. Now a short walk across the park to Springfield Avenue for a fresh scoop of artisanal ice cream at Honey and Hive or a cold brew and a game at Avenue Pub (for the grownups!). It’s a short bike ride to the pool where we spent many mornings with the Makos (the town swim team) and eventually watching our daughter drive there for her lifeguarding shifts.
Go the other way down stately Oakview, past our “Sentry” giant Spruce that has supplied many an art project with pinecones for neighborhood kids and given us incredible (and low maintenance) shade and privacy and you can catch the jitney to the Maplewood Train station just around the corner on Ivy Circle. Or, if you prefer, take a 15 minute walk to the station crossing through our town’s Olmstead-designed Memorial Park.
As you walk up the front walkway at #117 let the first level window boxes greet you with a splash of color for any season or feel free to rest on the front stoop with a neighbor and catch up on the latest news.
As you enter the house you’ll be greeted with light streaming in from all sides and a spacious kitchen with a breakfast nook facing the level, fenced-in back yard where our daughter and her friends would laugh and play. We even camped with friends in the backyard during the pandemic-calling our yard and homestead, “Camp Oakie”. Step out onto the deck to grill or soak in the late afternoon sun or forsythia topping the fence in early April. Sit under the shade of the giant Oak and Birch tree and relax after gardening in the raised vegetable garden beds. The half bath just inside the back door makes it easy for guests that you may be entertaining so they don’t have to go up or down the stairs to the full bathrooms (maintaining a nice level of privacy for those spaces).
Upstairs, our daughter’s bedroom has the most incredible view of the sun setting over South Mountain Reservation and two closets. The hallway, cedar lined closet can hold all of your delicate items safely. The primary bedroom also has a West-facing window and two closets, while the front bedroom is perfect for guests and a home office.
The third floor is an excellent 4th bedroom-or sleepover and play space! Our daughter treasured that space and it grew up along with her from playing with American Girl dolls to crafting and then eventually becoming her sewing room during the pandemic where she sewed her graduation dress for her CHS graduation :)
Back down on the first floor you can cozy up in front of the fire in the winters or stay cool as the morning sun bathes the back of the house in light.
The walnut inlay on the hardwood floors delineate the first floor rooms and outline each space including the dining room where you can share many meals as formally or informally as you’d like.
The classic Maplewood room makes a great office or play space and the built-in shelves can hold anything you’d like as you look out over the raised garden beds.
We’ve loved the semi-finished basement and full bath as well as ample storage. We’ve also loved having a second fridge down there for “overflow” items from Costco runs or, well, beer.
As we back out of our long driveway and say farewell I thank this house for helping us transition from the city to the suburbs and for helping us raise our daughter in Maplewood. It is a solid and handsome house and we will miss it, and our amazing neighbors, a great deal.
We trust that you will make as many memories as we’ll carry with us at #117. Thank you for “writing” this excellent house’s new chapter and congratulations on becoming a part of this very special community. We know you will love it!
Sincerely,
Diane, Ron and Grace
