Take a winter walkabout throughout the Arboretum with Curatorial Director of Horticulture John Beirne. Observe the beautiful shapes, textures and muted colors decorating the garden during the coldest part of the year.
Prepare to notice -tree and shrub structure, bark interest, and the fascinating fruiting bodies on many plants. We will take note of the beige, tan and brown fallen leaves combined with evergreen splashes of color. We will perceive movement through the dried stems of ornamental grasses and perennial seedheads, which nourish and shelter many birds and smaller animals. We hope the walk will leave you with a new appreciation for the subtle beauty inherent to the winter garden, meadows, and woodlands.
This program takes place outdoors. Be prepared to walk our varied terrain. Dress warmly and comfortably. Hiking Boots, a warm cap, heavy jacket, and gloves are recommended.
