39 Oberlin Street
Dear Future Homeowner,
As far as we know, you will be only the fifth family to live in 39 Oberlin. Built in 1898, this beautiful house has made people feel so at home, so in the right place, that they have stayed, raised families, lived full lives under its protective roof.
The first family lived here for two generations, its twin daughters living their whole lives on the corner of Oberlin and Harvard. 39 Oberlin began as one of only two houses in the area, sitting in the midst of cherry farms that delighted Manhattan-ites coming all the
way out to Maplewood for getaways. Children who grew up here in the 1950s returned as grandparents in the next century to show us where, in the foyer, they broke the stained glass windows while playing "Superman!" (The patchwork continues to be preserved to this day.) In the 70s, we were told, the family ran a business that had a fleet of trucks parked in the backyard. At the turn of the century, the house was renovated by a fitness model and her brother, both falling in love with the house so far away from their homeland, Australia. And for the last 17 years, the house has helped nourish a jeweler, an actor, two children grown to adulthood, and four cherished dogs, among others.
The house stands strong in all storms, and not one drop of water has ever come into the basement because of the rain. Ask around -- this is worth its weight in gold! And in the pandemic it offered refuge and safety, as we were able to both hunker down and have enough space to maintain privacy when needed during one of the more challenging times in memory.
Warm, nurturing, secure, safe. This house has been our precious home, giving our family -- and those before us -- the space to grow, rest, and survive.
May you find your time here as precious as we have, and may you all find great happiness here in Maplewood.
Warmly,
Melissa, Joel, Elena, Tallulah, Luna, Maddie, Yuki, and Juni
