My parents bought this house in 1965 when they started their life together. They raised my brother and me in this beautiful house, and I am so grateful for the sense of home that my parents created for us. We experienced so much here! There were lazy Saturdays watching cartoons, busy school-day mornings as we all got ready to start our day, dinners around the table in the kitchen—all while hearing my dad’s beautiful violin playing in the background like a 56 Headley Place soundtrack. I enjoyed spending warm weather days at Orchard Park around the corner, creating lemonade stands with friends in the neighborhood, watching movies projected onto someone’s garage door, summer night “Ghost in the Graveyard” and “Kick the Can” marathons, annual block parties, and feeling like my neighbors were my “aunts” and “uncles”. I will never forget baking a wedding cake in the kitchen for my best friend’s mom, or hosting annual Thanksgiving dinners for my whole extended family. We made so many memories here at 56 Headley, and I will continue to treasure them for the rest of my life.
When I became an adult and a mother, I wanted to give my daughter the same sense of home that I had while growing up. I wanted to raise her in a loving community filled with kind people, surrounded by beauty, fun activities, and opportunities. I left Manhattan and moved back to Maplewood, and it did not disappoint! This neighborhood continues to be a magical place! Just as I did, my daughter learned how to ride a bike on the Headley Place dead end. And she has continued to be part of the legacy of playing neighborhood games on hot summer nights, and enjoying hangouts at Orchard Park and annual block parties.
